The disturbing and traumatic rise of physical and sexual abuse of children has claimed the attention of our nation and society. The following policies reflect our commitment to provide protective care for all our children and volunteers who participate in church sponsored activities.
1. Adults who have been convicted of either child sexual or physical abuse should not volunteer service in any church sponsored activity or program for children. Any information indicating that a candidate poses a threat to others or has any prior history of physical abuse or sexual abuse directed against another person will result in the immediate removal of the individual candidate from consideration for a children’s ministry position.
2. Adult survivors of childhood sexual or physical abuse need the love and acceptance of this church family. Individuals who have such a history should discuss their desire to work with children with the children’s minister or senior pastor prior to engaging as a volunteer and should always have another adult helper in their activity.
3. All adult volunteers working with children are strongly encouraged to be members of
4. Adult volunteers should observe the “Two-Man Rule”. This requires that workers are never alone with children without an adult partner. An adult is anyone 18 years of age and older. If there is no possible way for there to be 2 adults then the activity must be held in a public area where doors are open with a clear view of the activity. All overnight or transportation must have 2 adults in order for the event to take place.
5. Adult volunteers should immediately report any behaviors which seem abusive or inappropriate to the direct staff member in charge of the event, in case of their absence, to the supervisor of the event who will then contact the staff member as soon as possible.
6. Outside groups using the church should provide their own childcare and follow the guidelines given for childcare.
